Reflections Along the Way

From the Desk of Steve Macchia

The season of Lent is forty days (minus Sundays) which culminates on Resurrection Sunday – Easter 2011. “Forty days has come to be an excellent period in which to prepare for the Resurrection of the Lord.  Jesus took forty days in the wilderness to fast, to fight the Devil, and to prepare for his ministry. Likewise, Moses spent forty days on Mount Sinai, receiving the Law (which no one finally kept but Jesus himself). In the Old Testament a special meaning was attached to the forty-day period: devout encounter with the Lord. But then that meaning was both acknowledged and superseded in the New Testament by Christ’s divine activity – and the Law was superseded by Grace! Therefore we, in matching our own forty days of faithful commitment to the Lord’s, admit the reality of Grace in our lives and mimic our Jesus as well.” (from Reliving the Passion by Walter Wangerin Jr.).

In what ways are you preparing for a devout encounter with the Lord this Lenten season? You might consider ways to humble yourself and sacrifice a want or need in place of deeper devotion to Christ. Ask the Lord for his guiding hand to lead you through the season of Lent in ways that honor and please God and are a joy to all who travel with you on this forty day journey of faith.

LTi Ministry Highlights
The ministry of LTi is growing and expanding. We are maximizing opportunities to serve outside of our immediate communities and invest in the souls of leaders all over the country and other parts of the world.  Here’s where Steve Macchia, Rick Anderson and others on the team have been invited to serve of late:
  • Soul Care Retreat for Christ the King Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • California Southern Baptist Convention “On Target” conference in Torrance, CA where we led a 2-hour seminar called “Preparing Your Church for Transformation” featuring the Ten Traits of a Healthy Church paradigm and the CHAT Survey.  Macchia also gave a key-note address to the 500+ attendees on “The Leader’s Life of Transformation.” (Photo caption: Steve Macchia on a 10-ft tall screen during his presentation)
  • Spiritual Leadership Communities 3rd of 4 retreats in Sharon, MA where we focused on the subject of “Spiritual Discernment.”
  • The former Soviet-occupied country of Moldova to offer teaching, training, and leadership development at the largest church in the country, Jesus Savior Church, in the capital city of Chisinau as well as lead a soul care retreat for young leaders and speak at the local college/seminary.
  • A Healthy Church Workshop held by the Congregational Church Development Division of the NACCC in Novi, Michigan.
  • PastorServe in Kansas City, Missouri where we taught and invested in a church planting gathering.
  • Soul Care Retreat and teaching a Rule of Life seminar at the Christian Leadership Alliance National Conference in Dallas, Texas.

  • Restoring Leaders’ Souls article in Outcomes Magazine (Christian Leadership Alliance).

Resources for the Journey

Is there a
spiritual director
inside of you?

Selah is now enrolling for the 2011-2013 cohort.

“Selah has had a huge influence on my life and ministry. I was on a burnout track in my ministry when I began in Selah. It was so freeing. I am now doing spiritual direction in my ministry as a staff member at my church and am using the principles that I learned in almost all areas of my ministry and in my private life. My training at Selah has opened up many opportunities for me professionally and as I have applied what I learned has significantly helped me personally was well.”

“Selah had a significant impact on how I view myself as a pastor. I do not see myself as a spiritual director as much as a pastor who is using the disciplines and methods of spiritual direction in every aspect of my pastoral ministry. I am more attentive to the Holy Spirit not only in counseling/discipleship situations, but in group settings, while I am preparing sermons, … Selah has impacted every aspect of my pastoral ministry, and as a result of my participation in Selah my experience of the Spirit has deepened, for which I am truly thankful.”

“[My Selah training] has affected every way of how I walk with Jesus on ‘the Way.’ It has affected my pastoral ministry, not just being a presence in others’ lives, but also seeking the Lord for setting the pace of my own life/spiritual needs … not wanting to be a typical pastor who gets lost in the doing.”
